Our Work

Preparing Students of Color for the New Economy

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation recognized the need for a diverse and competitive workforce skilled in technical fields. It asked PPA to identify opportunities for young students of color to obtain the educational credentials needed for jobs in the new knowledge-based economy.

PPA researchers assessed existing programs in Detroit and across Michigan and developed a blueprint for expanding opportunities.

The PPA Team: The project was led by Senior Policy Consultant Willard K. Walker, a recognized expert in workforce diversity issues.

Our Work: The Kellogg Foundation was especially interested in expanding educational opportunities for minority students in areas such as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. PPA reviewed existing programs in the Detroit area. It produced a concept paper, "Engaging Students of Color in Michigan's New Economy."

Results: In the "Engaging Students" report, PPA proposes a strategy for better preparing students of color for college, increasing their contact with professionals in technical fields, and increasing the percentage of students of color with the desired post-secondary credentials.

Best Practices: PPA identified a Detroit program that it recommended should be expanded to provide education and career opportunities for underserved students
